Sierra Club Tennessee’s Executive Committee sets the direction for a statewide chapter serving roughly 40,000 members and supporters across all 95 counties. That mix runs in the organization’s DNA — since John Muir led the first Sierra Club outings in the 1890s, the club has paired time outdoors with legislative and political muscle, on the theory that people who’ve hiked a place together fight harder to protect it. As a 501(c)(4), Sierra Club Tennessee can lobby and engage in political advocacy in ways most environmental nonprofits, organized as 501(c)(3)s, legally can’t — which makes the Executive Committee’s judgment and oversight matter even more. Members bring policy, finance, planning, communication or organizational experience to guide that strategy, oversee the chapter’s finances and act as ambassadors in their communities.
Serve on the Executive Committee, attending quarterly meetings (roughly three hours each) and coming prepared with reports and materials reviewed ahead of time. Serve on at least one committee (Conservation, Outings, Political, Legislative, Environmental Justice or others), committing a minimum of four hours a month. Participate in fundraising: make a personal monthly donation that’s generous and appropriate for you, take part in the annual appeal and help recruit sponsors and donors for chapter events. Act as an ambassador for the chapter, carrying forward Sierra Club’s outings-to-advocacy tradition — recommend new members and future leaders, represent Sierra Club Tennessee in your network and at events and stay connected to conservation groups and community organizations in your area. Take part in long-range planning and help allocate resources against the chapter’s opportunities and capacity. Monitor and evaluate chapter activities and help provide vision and direction. Help ensure chapter operations stay legal and consistent with Sierra Club Tennessee’s bylaws and national governance (training provided). Share in financial oversight to keep the chapter solvent and operating continuously. Help protect the chapter’s standing by ensuring no policy or activity reflects poorly on Sierra Club Tennessee or the national organization. Take collective responsibility, alongside fellow Executive Committee members, for managing the committee’s own affairs rather than leaning on staff.
Commitment to Sierra Club Tennessee’s mission, with the self-awareness to commit only the hours you can realistically deliver. Experience, knowledge or interest in one or more of: conservation policy, climate or energy advocacy, environmental justice, finance, strategic planning or administrative and organizational management (environmental background helpful but not required). Previous board or executive committee experience or training is a strong plus. Willingness to give financially or help steward/identify donors and help raise funds for the chapter. Ability to meet the time commitment above, including quarterly meetings and monthly committee work.
