Job Description and Duties

Under general supervision, checks motor carrier for compliance with the California Highway Patrol administrative regulations relating to safety, maintenance and operational practices; perform in-depth vehicle inspections for annual certifications, makes recommendations regarding the granting of PUC operating authority; inspects carrier and chipper facilities for compliance with state and federal regulations pertaining to documentation of hazardous materials and wastes; prepares comprehensive written reports of inspections conducted; makes detailed investigations of vehicles involved in accidents to determine if cause was mechanical; assists in preparation of complaints, reports and exhibits; testifies as a witness in court. • The position(s) require(s) a valid California Drivers License (CDL). You must answer the questions addressing your CDL on your application. Ensure you provide your CDL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions.

• The CHP utilizes their own Motor Carrier Specialist I certification list. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications for the Motor Carrier Specialist I classification to be eligible to take the examination. To obtain certification list eligibility , please view the examination bulletin link at CalCareers and follow all instructions. In addition to applying for the examination, applicants MUST submit an application to this Job Control to be considered for the position.

Knowledge of computers, including proficiency in Microsoft Office programs. Knowledge of mechanical terminology common to motor carrier personnel.
